Experts from Zigong Dinosaur Museum and Zigong Global Geopark Management Center reviewed the site of a fossil found in Gongjing District in early August, and basically determined that the fossil was a dinosaur fossil, dating back about 150 million years. The exposed fossil was judged to be the limb bones, ribs and vertebra of dinosaurs from the preliminary shape, and has been collected for protection.
In early August, Mr. Hao, deputy director of the research department of Zigong Dinosaur Museum, drove by the slope of a construction site in Gongjing District, according to his occupational sensitivity, he felt that there might be fossils in the section, so he immediately stopped on the slope to look for dinosaur fossils. Mr. Hao then reported the situation to the Zigong Natural Resources and Planning Bureau and the Zigong Dinosaur Museum. The next day, on-site work was held at the site where the fossils were found to preserve the original site.
Since the first discovery of dinosaur fossils in 1915, 227 paleontological fossil sites have been discovered in Zigong by the end of 2022, including more than 170 dinosaur fossil sites. Individual fossils of dinosaurs, fish, amphibians, mammal-like reptiles, turtles, plesiosaurs, crocodiles, pterosaurs, as well as well-preserved ancient plant fossils such as silicified wood and dinosaur footprint fossils have been unearthed. A total of 48 species of vertebrates of 38 genera have been found, including 26 species of dinosaur fossils belonging to 21 genera. The number of dinosaur species accounts for one half of the total number in Sichuan and about one thirteenth of the total number in China. It is one of the most important dinosaur fossil sites in China and one of the most important paleontological fossil sites in the world.
